IMT Interview Preparation — Structured and High-Yield

The IMT interview uses a structured national scoring system, with each station marked independently by two interviewers. Candidates are assessed across defined domains using a 1–5 scoring scale, and marks are awarded only for what is clearly demonstrated during the interview.
This means interview performance is not judged on overall impression, but on how effectively candidates structure answers, communicate insight and judgement, and demonstrate readiness for registrar-level training. Small differences in clarity and structure can therefore have a meaningful impact on overall scores.
Station 1
Application and Suitability
This station focuses on your application and overall suitability for Internal Medicine Training. It begins with a short presentation of your achievements, followed by questions exploring commitment to IMT, professionalism, ethics, and governance. Communication skills are assessed throughout.

Station 2
Clinical Scenario
This station assesses clinical reasoning through a structured clinical scenario, including investigation, diagnosis, and management. Candidates are expected to demonstrate a safe, logical approach to clinical decision-making within a limited timeframe

Patient Handover
As part of the clinical scenario, candidates may be asked to deliver a short patient handover. This assesses prioritisation, clarity, and safe communication under time pressure.
